Vincent Ferrer’s sermons dedicated to the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16,19-31) show how the preacher constructs his schemes and changes them according to different circumstances. This article aims to analyze the structure of these sermons and the traces of performance in the different reportationes, focusing particularly on a section which describes the death of the sinner in a dramatic way. Ferrer indeed shapes an impressive funeral liturgy performed by demons and enriched by many similes. Yet, in some cases, the preacher also presents the soul being received in paradise or compelled to stay in purgatory. Finally, this article will argue that it is also possible to find a source on which Ferrer worked in a sermon of Iacopo da Varazze.
