UMCN 3.1: Neuromuscular development and genetic disordersAbstract
Neuralgic amyotrophy (a.k.a. Parsonage - Turner syndrome) is a very painful and debilitating disorder of the peripheral nerves of the shoulder and arm. Although known for over a century, it is underrecognized in daily practice. In this thesis the signs, symptoms and complications of the different forms of neuralgic amyotrophy are described from our experience with hundreds of patients. This information has also opened the way for new and better treatment options, which we now use. It has also lead to further, more fundamental research into the why and how of this disorder. These routes are charted in the thesis, and the information provided can - and has - lead doctors and other care-givers to better management of neuralgic amyotrophy patients; which was the authors' primary goal.
