This thesis reports on a descriptive research into interrupting constructions, or: intercalations, in Dutch, as for instance interjections and parentheticals. The description is based on a corpus of 1 million words written language and 0.5 million words spoken language. It is formalized in the rule-based parser of Dutch AMAZON. When the description of the authentic use of intercalations was confronted with existing hypotheses on each type of intercalation, it became clear that constructions which had hitherto been analysed separately by means of deletion approaches can now be analysed in the same way as interrupting, parenthetical constructions.
