ASP Conf. Ser. 349: Astrophysics of Variable Stars
The purpose of this PhD school was to bring together young PhD students in astronomy and to offer them a course focussed on variable-star research, meanwhile training them in optimising their skills in scientific communication. Five very broad and timely research topics in stellar astrophysics were selected by international experts. Our idea was to give the participants a chance to obtain experience in presenting oral contributions and to bring them closer to well-known experts in an open atmosphere. Moreover, the students were offered the opportunity to meet other PhD students in similar phases of their scientific education. The organizers are convinced that the senior experts as well as the young PhD students have greatly profited from these interactions. Students questioned the lecturers and gave feedback to the speakers, and vice versa. The senior lecturers benefited from this interplay, while the PhD students gained significant experience for future active participation in large conferences, both of which are essential in modern scientific research. This PhD conference was held in the framework of the International Year of Physics 2005 and is the first such workshop organised under the auspices of the European Network of Excellence in AsteroSeismology (ENEAS). Besides one invited lecture and one open-question discussion on selected topics in variable star research, we also provided a large amount of time for obligatory 15-minute oral contributions by each PhD student, with additional optional poster presentations. This book is a collection of texts comprising original research work and training. Part I contains the lectures on variable-star science. Parts
