In the previous chapter we saw how polynomial automorphisms played a role in the study of dynamical systems. In this chapter we show that polynomial automorphisms arise naturally in the study of group actions on affine varieties and discuss the interplay between group actions, polynomial automorphisms and locally finite, in particular locally nilpotent, derivations.
