The research presented in this thesis aims at increasing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction of Gram positive microorganisms with their environment, using genome sequence information as the starting point. We do this from both the perspective of a specific bacterium, where we try to predict the function of a wide range of proteins encoded by its genome, as well as from the perspective of specific domains or proteins, where we analyze one particular class of proteins or one specific domain in a wide range of bacterial species
