The index St. Eustatius: Borderellen en het Emancipatie Register, 1862-1863 is a dataset of all persons registers as enslaved on the Dutch island of St. Eustatius in 1862, and freed when slavery ended in the Dutch colonies on July 1, 1863. The dataset is based on to two registers: the Statian Emancipation Register and the so-called ‘Borderellen’ of the Algemene Rekenkamer, the General Audit Office of the Dutch government in The Hague.
The emancipation register lists the names and surnames of formerly enslaved people who were freed in 1863. The ‘Borderellen’ are lists handed in by slave owners in St. Eustatius in order to claim compensation from the Dutch government for their loss of "property" when slavery ended.
