Doppelbauer investigated the potential of aluminium monofluoride (AlF) for use in laser cooling and trapping experiments of cold molecules. While laser-cooled atoms are the workhorse of modern atomic physics, ultracold molecules are just entering the field. This PhD thesis presents spectroscopic experiments, computer simulations and the characterisation of a molecule source that prove the potential of AlF for ultracold sciences. In the coming years, this molecule can help to understand fundamental chemistry, discover physics beyond the Standard Model and will be at the center of quantum simulators of condensed matter.
