Applied the dichotomous Rasch model to the spatial subtest of R. Amthauer's (1973) Intelligence Structure Test Battery, completed by 905 secondary school children (aged 12-15 yrs). The Rasch model did not hold when all items were included in the analysis. The Q2 statistic was highly significant, which may indicate multidimensionality of the items. The use of coping strategies is proposed as a possible explanation for the Rasch inhomogeneity. Recommendations for how to deal with coping in intelligence tests are offered.
