Deliverables ItemWP4: Deprivation of Citizenship
Reference: 4.1
Date: 27 Jun 2008
Authors: Sandra Mantu
This research aims at analysing rules and state acts that lead to loss of citizenship. This aspect of nationality law is somewhat neglected by the legal and socio-political literature. One explanation might be that there is an assumption that loss of citizenship does not occur that often in practice or that it is not crucial for the interplay between nation, society and the state. This rather minute interest in the rules regarding loss is doubled by a lack of statistical data on the subject matter, making it difficult to asses the practical relevance and magnitude of deprivation acts. However, all the recent changes in nationality laws have dealt not only with acquisition of citizenship but have simultaneously introduced new reasons for loss of citizenship suggesting that at least for the legislators of the various states the subject is of some interest. What remains unclear is the reason behind this interest.
