To examine differences in educational careers among nonindigenous youth in the Netherlands, a secondary analysis was performed on 1989-1992 questionnaire data from 2,024 secondary school students. Special attention was paid to socioeconomic status & circumstances of immigration. Analysis of family background factors, eg, ethnic origin & cultural level, revealed that parents' educational level corresponded positively with student academic achievement. Number of siblings, length of time in the Netherlands, & use of the Dutch language at home had almost no effect on scholastic success. However, family background factors still remained as the most important predictor of success.
