Abstract

Introduces a special journal issue (see abstracts of related articles) on homelessness. Common hypotheses about the causes of homelessness are discussed, distinguishing causation theory, according to which an undesirable start of life begins a vicious cycle that ends in homelessness, & selection theory, which states that the same vicious cycle is started by traumas & unforeseen circumstances. The interdisciplinary character of theoretical & empirical homelessness research is emphasized. Contributions, which focus on recent Dutch theoretical sociological research or Dutch policies concerning homelessness prevention & provisions, are summarized.
