A literature review shows that there is considerable vitality in the subdisciplines of sociology of youth & socialization processes. In addition to having a sound, well-developed theoretical basis, there is a balance between quantitative & qualitative studies. Longitudinal studies, unheard of twenty years ago, have provided new insights. In general, studies on youth have undergone a shift away from being judgmental & problematic toward being more descriptive. Studies on socialization processes have moved from a static to a dynamic perspective. Three main questions remain to be resolved: (1) the relationship between structure theory & act theory; (2) issues of life course; & (3) problems of meaning.
