Game theory and its coalition theories have been used in many disciplines, but they have hardly been applied to strategic alliances. This paper explores the opportunities and problems in applying coalition theories to cooperation between firms. First game theory, coalition theory and alliance literature are presented. From this discussion it appears that coalition theory is in general capable to explain the composition of an alliance. But to make the theory more suitable several adjustments should be made. The most important is repairing the lack of dynamics in coalition theories.
