This study shows that university actors implement gender quotas through three types of practice: gender-specific calls, scouting, and ‘playing around’. Identifying this variation in practices helps to understand actors’ sense-making of compliance to gender quotas, the role of tacit knowledge regarding compliance, and women’s decision-making power in academic bodies.
