Abstract
Ever since the first computers arrived in the Netherlands there has been a shortage of computing scientists. Today the cry for more ICT-specialists is also heard everywhere. But who are these specialists? What do we know about them, except that they do something with computers? Important questions, since the Netherlands expects a lot of these specialists of information- and communicationtechnology. In this study Ruud van Dael analyses the occupation formation of the computing specialist in the Netherlands. Via historical and sociological research of occupational associations of computing specialists, of the founding of education in informatics and of the softwarehouses RAET and BSO he shows that several types of computing specialists have been formed. Every type has a different definition of its field and its work. The different types of computing specialists vary so much that every attempt to integrate them has failed until now. The occupation computing specialist does not exist - or not yet
