The invention relates to liquid crystal cells and layered structures comprising polyimide alignment layers and a solution of a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal, e.g. disodium cromoglycate (DSCG), in combination with one or more surface agents, e.g. a member of the Triton X family. The incorporation of a suitable amount of one or more surface agents, such that their concentration within the solution lies in a predetermined range, improves the homogeneity and time-stability of the alignment of liquid crystal molecules on the polyimide alignment layers.
