IL-18 has been reported to counteract obesity and metabolic syndrome, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this issue, Masters and colleagues describe how NLRP1 inflammasome induces IL-18 production in fat, solving not only an important biological mechanism, but also opening the door for therapeutic approaches (Murphy et al., 2016).
