This article examines why and how the first pension policies were adopted in North America, Europe, and the antipodes; identifies what the most salient dimensions of pension policy are; and discusses national policy responses to the challenges of aging, changing employment patterns, and fiscal austerity. The article also analyzes the most important explanations for cross-national differences in pension policy. The discussion centers on the affluent democracies, with references to developing countries where relevant.
