Abstract
Unter Rückgriff auf das Diffusions-Modell von Everett M. Rogers und mithilfe der Metapher der Übermittlung von Nachrichten zeigt der Autor auf, hinsichtlich welcher Aspekte sich die Diffusion sozialer Innovationen von der Diffusion anderer, besser erforschter Innovations- Typen im Wirtschaftssektor unterscheidet. Besonderheiten konstatiert Brandsen mit Blick auf die Rolle der ursprünglichen Innovatoren sowie auf den Prozess der Übernahme sozialer Innovationen. Die Forschung um soziale Innovationen sollte sich infolgedessen nicht alleine den Erfolgen, den weit verbreiteten Fällen und den professionellen Organisationen und Netzwerken ihrer Verbreitung widmen. Stattdessen sollte sie ihre Aufmerksamkeit verstärkt auch auf gescheiterte, abgebrochene und im Stillen erfolgreiche Fälle richten sowie Organisationen der Freiwilligen und Bürgerinnen und Bürger in den Blick nehmen, die auf ihr lokales Umfeld beschränkt agieren.

With recourse to Everett M. Rogers' diffusion model and using the metaphor of news transmission, the author shows how the diffusion of social innovation differs from that of other types of innovation in the industry sector, for which a greater body of research exists. Brandsen poses that these differences include the role of original innovators and the process of how social innovations are adopted. Research on social innovation should therefore not limit itself to the successes, well-known cases and professional organisations or networks, but focus more on failed, stilted and silently successful cases, including organisations by volunteers and citizens whose activities are confined to their local environment
