This paper questions the consequences of the introduction of the strategy of gender mainstreaming for the position of existing equality agencies in organizations. We critically examine the alleged dangers and shifts in responsibilities and power by describing and reflecting upon five gender mainstreaming projects in Flanders (Belgium). Contrary to existing ideas, we find that gender mainstreaming provides opportunities for gender equality agencies rather than threats to their existence. These opportunities go further than survival, as our cases suggest that the position of gender equality agencies can be strengthened under the right circumstances, such as adequate resources, expertise, and continuity of staff.
