Diversity networks support the needs of employees with different social identities, such as women, ethnic minorities, LGBTs, disabled and young people. The aim of this study is to come to a better understanding of how diversity networks contribute to equality by examining how diversity network leaders discursively construct the value of their networks against the backdrop of discourses on diversity and equality. We conducted a multiple case study of five different diversity networks in a financial service organization in the Netherlands. Our results show that network leaders tend to construct the value of their networks primarily in terms of individual career development and community building, to prevent their members' isolation. However, they are much less articulate about removing the barriers to inclusion in the organization as a core value of their networks. We conclude that the value of diversity networks is limited when these networks only address the individual and group levels of equality and leave systemic inequalities at the organizational level unchallenged. In this paper, we reflect on the impact that Joan Acker's work has on our thinking and our careers as gender scholars in management and organization studies in Europe. First, we tell our personal stories of close encounters with Joan Acker. Second, we highlight what we consider to be two key contributions of Joan Acker. The first are the interrelated gendered processes regarding structure, culture, interaction and identity from her work in the early 1990s, the second the notion of inequality regimes from her later work on the intersections of gender, class and race. We then discuss how Acker's work has been influential in our research on gendered organizations, and in our teaching when we use it in our explanations of the functioning of gender in organizations to students, and in our work as advisors and consultants for organizations interested in equality, diversity and inclusion. Finally, we elaborate on new directions building on Acker's work, especially in current theorizing on gender and diversity in organizational change. This ability enables them to decisively respond to new expertise demands that arise as a result of changes in their expertise territories. Thus far, there is a limited understanding of how flexperts develop new areas of expertise in a complex, professional setting, and how they accomplish to materialize this new expertise for multiple stakeholders, both inside and outside organizations. In this qualitative interview study, we aim to increase our understanding of the processes by which flexperts accomplish the renewal of their expertise. Ten Dutch flexperts, known for their high level of expert performance and ability to renew their expertise, and from a variety of disciplines, were interviewed. Based on the findings of our study, we have developed a model that summarizes their expertise renewal processes. This Model of Expertise Renewal extends process models on expertise redevelopment and adaptive expertise, and provides directions for future research on how the ability of expertise renewal contributes to the career sustainability of experts. Furthermore, it provides experts, Human Resource Development (HRD) practitioners, and line managers with a framework for creating learning paths and interventions for renewing expertise in case expertise territories are about to change. More specifically, we analyse a communication technology that presents a case of consumerization of patients. Using critical diversity literature, we theorize how consumerism embedded in technology assumes a ‘universal individual’, creating a tension for healthcare professionals between acknowledging differences among patients while aiming for equal treatment of all patients. Based on our empirical analysis of so-called personal online health communities, we explore, at the micro level, how healthcare professionals deal with this tension. We identify four different practices: lacking awareness of differences, downplaying differences, discomfort around acknowledging differences and actively accommodating differences. We theorize how they ultimately all create new inequalities. Er blijkt géén relatie tussen aanwezigheid en gebruik van HR maatregelen, steun van leidinggevende en collega’s en bevlogenheid, inzetbaarheid en ervaren gezondheid. Daarop is één uitzondering. Jansen, Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 32, November 2019, nr. 4, pp. 279-298. This study investigates the effect of shared decision making on the work and workload of health care professionals in hospitals. In shared decision making, patients are actively involved in the decision making process. Empirical research shows that shared decision making has positive effects on patient related outcomes, however there are no studies into the effects of this way of decision making for the health care professionals involved. Building on the Job Demands-Resources model, we studied the mechanisms that can explain the effects of shared decision making on health care professionals when applied in the care processes for patients with prostate cancer. The study collected qualitative data on the care processes from ten patients and the two health care professionals involved. Next to a confirmation of the positive effects for patients, the results show that the health care professionals positively evaluate shared decision making. Regarding workload, the health care professionals report a healthy balance between job demands and resources. The mechanisms to explain these positive results include the carefulness of the design and implementation of such a new way of working. This means that a well-thought out implementation of a new way of working support keeping workload within healthy limits, even in a high-workload sector.
