Reliability, generalizability, measurement equivalence, and validity were demonstrated. This measure will facilitate future research on HPWPs. We bring clarity to the field of High Performance Work Practices by creating a consistent measure that can be used across countries and cultures. We studied 3,289 managers working for companies in 18 different countries. Our results show that there are consistencies in the structure of High Performance Work Practices in different contexts. We go further to explain why these practices are effective in enhancing the performance of organizations in different contexts. This will help managers and researchers to better understand how they can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations and to close gaps between managers and researchers. Drawing on dynamic capability theory, this study examines how these strategic orientations, through the deployment of their underlying capabilities, are drivers of firm performance. Based on a cross-industry sample, the findings indicate that firm's customer orientation and supply-base orientation are complementary strategic assets that contribute to superior performance. The findings provide new insights regarding the interplay of different strategic orientations and the importance of capability deployment. However, our understanding of how interorganizational networks govern themselves when developing innovations is still limited. Most network management literature does not focus on the activities employed by network actors and/or does not recognize that there may be different modes of network management. This study explores how, why and in which combination network management activities are employed in a network and in doing so proposes a new conceptualization of network management. Using primary and secondary data pertaining to eleven innovation projects, this study reveals how network management consists of combinations of (rather than individual) management activities undertaken to manage a network. This study identifies three distinct modes of network management: basically coordinated, control-oriented and reward-oriented. Moreover, this study proposes that network actors try to match the management mode to their prevailing mental model as well as the type of network (e.g. in terms of project innovativeness). Sustainable technology, as an effective means to achieve sustainable development, recently gained much interest both from society and academia. Prior research investigated the impact of several factors on the adoption of sustainable technology, which gives us a basic understanding of firms' adoption behaviours. However, the research results scattered across different yields, making the knowledge on sustainable technology adoption is fragmented. Relying on a systematic review of both quantitative and qualitative studies, this article distinguishes different types of sustainable process technology and discusses factors influencing the adoption. Several reasons may lead to the different impacts of specific factors between studies, such as firm size, ownership, technology type, interrelations with other factors and time difference. Directions for future research are provided. This study investigates how innovation activities can be interpreted in the context of multi-organizational ecologies. Taking a project-level perspective, this study proposes a typology of four activity sets that are relevant in this context: strategic predevelopment, engineering, commercialization, and project management. The authors use archival and survey data on government-funded sustainable energy projects in the Netherlands to study the validity and relevance of the typology and show that the typology has discriminant and convergent validity. Results on the prevalence of the activity sets show that all four activity sets occur in sustainable energy projects, but to differing degrees. Furthermore, the typology is relevant because it helps to explain differences in innovation performance for complex innovations. Two activity sets – strategic predevelopment activities and commercialization activities – have significant and positive effects on innovation performance, whereas the two other activity sets – engineering and project management – do not. The data show that for sustainable energy projects, commercialization activities are often insufficient, but important to reach high innovation performance. Seven explorative case studies were conducted in an R&D and business context of two large global high-tech companies. The results suggest that if the necessary conditions are met, social media usage increases the transparent, moderational and multi-directional interactions that in turn influence four capabilities for absorptive capacity: connectedness, socialization tactics, cross-functionality and receptivity, a hitherto overlooked capability. Hence, we observe that social media are boundary-spanning tools that can be used to build and increase companies' absorptive capacity. Drawing on the resource-based theory of the firm, human resource management research, and innovation management literature, the authors distinguish two types of workforce flexibility, functional and numerical, and hypothesize differential effects on NPD outcomes. A large-scale sample of 284 Dutch firms across various manufacturing goods and business services industries serves to test these hypotheses. The results suggest that functional flexibility positively influences incremental NPD only, internal numerical flexibility negatively influences incremental NPD only, and external numerical flexibility positively influences major NPD only. Thus, differences between major and incremental NPD are grounded in the human resource flexibility of the firm. This complements research that found that such differences lie in critical development activities, learning processes, and capabilities. It also complements product innovation research on flexibility in NPD processes and on flexibility in organizational structures and routines. It extends the resource-based theory of the firm suggesting that human resource flexibility is part of the dynamic capabilities that allow firms to reconfigure existing competencies. The conclusions imply that managers of manufacturing and service firms may use training and education and create a functional flexible workforce that can progressively enhance incremental NPD outcomes. They may want to avoid paying overtime, because such internal numerical flexibility hampers incremental NPD, but use fixed-term contracts to expand external numerical flexibility to enhance major NPD.
