I will unmask some persistent myths related to recruitment and selection which are often used to explain away the under-representation of women in senior academic positions in the Netherlands. These myths are unmasked by revealing the various gender practices tied in with professorial recruitment and selection, such as gatekeeping, male networks and the construction of scientific excellence. This presentation challenges the view of an academic world where the allocation of rewards and resources is governed by the normative principles of transparency and meritocracy, and highlights the distance between the ideal ethos of science and the actuality of social interaction in daily working situations. Our central question pertains to how account managers ‘do gender’ in constructing their professional identities. While account management has been considered a sales occupation with a strong masculine connotation, some indications towards ‘feminization’ have also been observed. Our analysis of 39 interviews with white women and men working as account managers in the Netherlands suggests that these account managers construct a ‘tough salesman’ identity and a ‘co-operative communicator’ identity. These identities have different gender connotations. The ‘co-operative communicator’ identity facilitates a critical dialogue with the – often implicit – masculinity in the ‘tough salesman’ identity norm. We reflect on the effects of these gender connotations both for account managers and for our practice as organization researchers who intend to deconstruct rather than reproduce gender stereotypes in our study of professional identities. In the Dutch case, a formal telework program was discontinued, but managers viewed informal teleworking an established practice fitting Dutch cultural values. In line with expectations, in the French case, the design of the formal telework policy and managers' telework attitudes and telework management-behaviours reflected power distance and uncertainty avoidance to be valued, which reduced telework practice. Moreover, the French managers mentioned collectivist values, work-life balance, and tradition as arguments against telework. However, their perceptions of telework as an unavoidable work practice in a globalizing economy also reflected a long-term orientation. It is concluded that despite institutional pressures leading to cross-cultural convergence in telework adoption, multinationals' global telework programs should remain sensitive to cultural variations, meanwhile taking the local histories of telework adoption processes into account. Gender awareness in doctors contributes to equity and equality in health and aims towards better health for men and women. Nevertheless, gender has largely been ignored in medicine. First, it is stated that medicine was ‘gender blind’ by not considering gender whenever relevant. Secondly, medicine is said to be ‘male biased’ because the largest body of knowledge on health and illness is about men and their health. Thirdly, gender role ideology negatively influences treatment and health outcomes. Finally, gender inequality has been overlooked as a determinant of health and illness. The uptake of gender issues in medical education brings about specific challenges for several reasons. For instance, the political-ideological connotations of gender issues create resistance especially in traditionalists in medical schools. Secondly, it is necessary to clarify which gender issues must be integrated in which domains. Also, some are interdisciplinary issues and as such more difficult to integrate. Finally, schools need assistance with implementation. The integration of psychosocial issues along with biomedical ones in clinical cases, the dissemination of literature and education material, staff education, and efforts towards structural embedding of gender in curricula are determining factors for successful implementation. Gender equity is not a spontaneous process. Medical education provides specific opportunities that may contribute to transformation for medical schools educate future doctors for future patients in future settings. Consequently, future benefits legitimize the integration of gender as a qualitative investment in medical education. Moreover, research has shown that task characteristics and social support affect informal learning. On the basis of these insights. the authors examined the effects of task characteristics (psychological job demands, job control) and social support from the supervisor and colleagues on informal on-the-job learning among 1,588 managers in the Dutch home-care sector. A regression analysis revealed that high demands, high control, and high colleague and supervisor support were each associated with high levels of informal learning. The authors found no evidence for statistical interactions among the effects of these concepts. They concluded that to promote managers' informal workplace learning, employers should especially increase job control. TI - Task characteristics and managerial learning. The debate on Ulysses arrangements has predominantly been waged in terms of autonomy conceived of as the right to non-intervention. On the basis of our empirical investigations into the experiences of persons directly involved with Ulysses arrangements, we argue that a care ethics perspective may broaden and deepen the debate on Ulysses arrangements, by introducing additional concepts, such as vulnerability, responsibility and mutuality, and by refining familiar concepts, such as autonomy. One of the reported threats to teleworkers' personal lives is that in order to finish their work, they not only use up saved commuting time, but also part of their non-working hours, even to the extent of becoming workaholics. Recent empirical analyses show that teleworkers do seem to work longer hours than non-teleworkers. Yet there is an interesting observation to be made: teleworkers are not found to work longer hours when compared with employees who are given the teleworking option but not taking it. One might hypothesise, therefore, that there might be other factors accounting for the longer working hours of teleworkers (and of "teleworkable" job-holders), rather than teleworking as such. For that reason, the effect of teleworking on working hours was controlled for job and pay system characteristics. In line with expectations, salaried work, higher wages, and some fringe benefits accounted for longer hours, and telework did not. Therefore, telework may be rightly used as an HRM-tool to attract and/or retain (scarce) personnel, for it allows employees to save commuting time and, consequently, contributes to a better work-home balance. These organization concepts play an important role in the diffusion of management in organizational praxis. Soon after their introduction, some concepts become extensively debated and widely associated with changes in actual organizations. However these allegedly novel ideas are easily abandoned after a short while and replaced by the next innovative vision on organizing. Unsurprisingly, these temporarily popular concepts leave an impression of management intellectuals and practitioners as capricious, constantly jumping on the next management idea. The presumed transient and non-cumulative nature of these 'management fashions' easily invites various knowledge carriers to repeatedly start from scratch and provides a fertile ground for reinventing the wheel. Management fashion literature suggests that these recurring patterns unavoidably induce 'continuous transience' in management knowledge. Constantly introducing knowledge commodities as new easily makes the existing regarded as old and reduce its attractiveness. Such a view at least suggests little bases for entrenchment within important knowledge carriers. Starting from the premise that 'new' not necessarily implies transience of the 'old', this book seeks to develop a theory of sedimentation. Unlike current management fashion accounts, this study shows that during an alleged downturn, a concept leaves a variety of different traces in various knowledge carriers such as print media, consultancies and business organizations that follow their own trajectory loosely coupled to the concept they were initially associated with. At the same time the paper identifies important factors shaping the likelihood of a concept's erosion, thereby emphasizing that the viability of these traces remains particularly fragile PB - [Nijmegen : University of Nijmegen] TI - Surges and sediments : organization concepts between transience and continuity N1 - Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, 3 maart 2004 PS - XI, 148 p. However, more and more examples of female ethnic minority entrepreneurs are documented, particularly in the UK, who have been successful in establishing a business in a still highly patriarchal world of migrant entrepreneurs (Westwood & Bhachu, 1987). In the Netherlands, 25 % of all ethnic minority entrepreneurs are female (Poutsma & van den Tillaart, 1998). Yet, little is known about how they perceive their socio-economic environment and the way they construct their identities. The objective of our study is therefore to contribute to theory development revolving the identity construction of Female Entrepreneurs of Moroccan and Turkish Origin’s (hereafter called femtos). Consequently, our research explores how femtos construct a more or less coherent self-identity out of their various shifting multiple social identifications. By doing so, we will focus on the ambiguities of femtos’ multiple identity construction and the dilemma’s that emerge from these. We will additionally study how femtos reconcile these identity-related dilemma’s. The purpose of this paper is to develop a tentative conceptual framework concerning the ongoing and changing multiple identity construction of femtos. The concepts of the dialogical self and multiple identity are being used in order to gather ‘situated knowledge’ (Haraway, 1991) on these entrepreneurs. Therefore, eight femtos were interviewed and asked to describe their lives through ‘life-chapters’ (McAdams, 1993; Buitelaar, 2002). All of these interviews were thoroughly analyzed, and four of them are used for this paper. Confronting and comparing theoretical notions with this empirical material has lead to a description of five themes or social practices which were brought forward in these narratives. This pilot-study has resulted in a first conceptualization of the representation of femtos’ multiple identities. This conceptualization will serve as a guideline for further research. Training is, for instance, no longer an isolated activity for which training professionals alone are responsible. It has been given a strategic function. Training professionals are expected to be instrumental in setting up learning processes that are in line with the strategic policy and, moreover, ensuring that this is done in a cost conscious and effective manner. It is proving difficult for training professionals to strike a balance between the interests of the organisation on the one hand and the interests of individual employees on the other. Knowledge productivity and distribution of knowledge have become important activities as knowledge has come to be the ''capital'' of the organisation. Training is no longer the only way to make employees competent and keep them so. To an ever greater extent training is being replaced by learning on the job. The responsibility for the learning process is increasingly being placed on the learning individual or on the team of which he is a part. These changes were the reason for the Faculty of Educational Science & Technology of the University of Twente together with the Faculty of Technology and Management to decide to conduct a study in these developments and the consequences in terms of participation and costs In the main, this study consists of two parts. On the one hand, both present and expected developments in the field of training and development in work organisations are being studied, with specific attention to their consequences for the knowledge and skills (competencies) of training specialists. On the other hand, a survey among a select group of respondents attempted to gain an insight into the costs of and participation in training activities by employees in work organisations.
