Development of new drugs is a lengthy and complicated process involving many disciplines, Here we provide a background for the audience and review new developments in drug discovery and (pre)clinical development. These include the role of ‘omics’ technologies and the introduction of ‘biologicals’. We discuss the changing roles of academia, small biotech companies and ‘big pharma’.
