Abstract:
|
The importance and significance of gender in religious ideas, practices and experiences is increasingly acknowledged and studied.[2] As these studies show, religion is a thoroughly gendered phenomenon. In this article I focus on the Catholic religion, and in particular, on women’s and men’s beliefs in Mary on Bougainville Island during and immediately succeeding the nationalist struggle for independence from Papua New Guinea.
