The situation context of Self-Injurious Behaviour. A host of theories exist about the causes of Self-Injurious Behaviour (SIB) (organic or genetic disorders, psychiatric syndromes, behaviouristic models, socio-cultural theories, etc.). Most experts assume that SIB usually results from a combination of biologic, psychic and situational factors. This research project focused on the situation context of SIB. We observed 22 intellectually disabled people. This was done with three premises: no specific hypothesis beforehand; trying to reconstruct the person's view of the situation; observation in the every-day lives of these people. The observation results showed that in most of the cases a relation between the SIB and it's situation context was demonstrable, but that these relations were different across cases. Examples of situation factors related to SIB are: the presence of food, drink or tobacco; interactions with caregivers; being brought into a coercion situation; lack of stimulation (boredom) or just the reverse (excitement). Because of these individual differences the aim of the project was to develop an observation protocol, by means of which caregivers are able to do such observations themselves to their clients with a SIB problem.
